What A lie: Ambassador Wunna Mg Lwin : & Police Chief Khin Yi

Believe it or not, on 11 December 2007, the SPDC's ambassador to Geneva, Wunna Maung Lwin said at the UN Human Rights Council - The junta has already established the Investigation Body chaired by the Home Minister to investigate human rights violations during the September protests –It was quite amazing for people of Burma hearing about the Investigation If this is the case why did not declare publicly? People haven’t known of such commission in the state’s media. What a lie. Ambassador.

Police chief at the last month press conference explained as follows

Yesterday, according to DVB news, the Junta has recently released from detention 96 monks who participated in September's marches, permitting half of them to return to the Ngwekyaryan monastery in Yangon. Authorities released the 96 monks, including Abbot Sayadaw U Yevada, last Friday from the Kaba Aye detention centre, where they had been kept since the government crackdown on monk-led protests on September 26-27.

Revolutionary changes or evolution process. Which way you want?

The process of change in Myanmar is going to be long, painful and evolutionary. There simply isn't a silver bullet,' said Zarni, a Myanmar exile and professor at Oxford University who goes by one name. The best hope for Myanmar, he said, is to wait for the inevitable transition in leadership, as the 74-year-old Than Shwe eventually hands power to a younger clique that could be more open to change.(From Bangkok Post)

Ko Zarni, it is a candid outlook that younger clique could be more open. The younger clique will carry on the tradition of army postulated by Ne Win and Than Shwe. Than Swe and his clique are 65-70 years old. Second in line group is (Than Sein , Thura Tin A Myin Oo) 55 to 65 years old. Third in line group is 50 to 55 yrs old army divisional commanders. All three groups would follow Ne Win army tradition, army’s leading role in politics. They will never abandon this concept.

Than Swe and his men’s only fear is mutiny from soldiers. Mutiny could occur when soldiers could not feed their families. If there is no rice in their kitchen, then there will be mutiny. There is Burmese saying, no one survive without rice for 7 days. Army buy rice as soon as harvest . Once army order is fulfilled, then merchants can trade openly.

Ko Zarni, how many years we have to wait, not patience anymore. Evolution takes time, it is necessary to make it faster by revolution. Soldiers only surrender when their might is in jeopardy. Look for ways to jeopardize their might(power). Arms struggle (guerrilla war) in cities may be necessary. Cultivate the spirit of dare to die instead of dying during painful evolution.

One eye Hun Sen sees one side only.

Cambodian PM Hun Sen said Mr Paulo Sergio Pinheiro report did nothing but "disturb" Burma's efforts toward reform. The UN should leave Burma alone and stop disrupting the junta's progress toward democracy by issuing critical reports on human rights abused. If you just keep opposing and pressuring (Burma), how can it solve its own problems?" Myanmar [Burma] has been moving smoothly ahead," "Leave them some space to work," Hun Sen said, adding that he believed the junta's goals for the future match the UN's. "They also want to have national reconciliation, democracy and respect for human rights."

Hun Sen need powerful glass to do more reading. I am very pity of him as his one eye vision is very poor as it was wounded in action. Hun Sen must understand that if there was no international watch dog, the political activists would have been more brutally suppressed. If Hun Sen can proof that SPDC want to have national reconciliation, democracy and respect for human rights we would be over enjoyed. What is Hun Sen yard stick for human rights? Yes, Burma have human right if consider with Pol Pots yard stick. More than one million people was killed and tortured during Pol Pot era. May be Hun Sen is comparing with what he saw in Cambodia during Pol Pot time.

Waste of UN Money?

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told Myanmar on Monday that the international community is running out of patience, saying the junta must embrace democracy and stop inflicting suffering on its own people.
"I know the international community is very much impatient, and our patience is running out," Ban told a news conference in Bangkok.

But ,the budget, about $865,000 next year, beginning January 1, 2008, was approved by the UN General Assembly last week to continue working toward democracy building between the military junta and pro-democracy leaders and monitoring of the situation in the country.

Junta will not listen what Gambari propose for real and effective dialogue with Daw Su. Gambari will be next Razali very soon. No one in Burma, except their cronies, believes that Junta will work with Daw Su. Anyhow, if the allocated budget amount is just a peanut, it is worthwhile, otherwise it is waste of money.

Races in Burma

The country’s total land area is 261,970 square miles. Ethnic minorities occupy roughly two-thirds: Arakan/Rakhine state- 14,200 square miles, Chin state - 13,907 square miles, Kachin state- 34,379 square miles, Karen/Kayin state- 11,731 square miles, Karenni/Kayah state- 4,530 square miles, Mon state- 4,747.8 square miles, Shan state- 60,155 square miles.

As of July 2003 estimate, population according to the military is 52.4 million; last official census which occurred in 1983 reported just over 35 million (35,442,972). The same source puts religious affiliation in percent as: Buddhism (89.2%), Christianity (5.0%), Islam (3.8%), Hinduism (0.5%), Spiritualism (1.2%) and others (0.2%).

The military regime identifies “135 national races” of which the major ones are Arakan/Rakhine (7 sub-groups), Burman/Bamar (9 sub-groups), Chin (53 sub-groups), Kachin (12 sub-groups), Karen/Kayin (11 sub-groups), Karenni/Kayah (9 sub-groups), Mon (1 group), and Shan (33 sub-groups). The appellation “135 races” is codified on dialectical variations.

Although the accuracy is questionable, the 15th November 2007 update of the Central Intelligence Agency World Factbook gives ethnic composition in Burma as: Burman 68%, Shan 9%, Karen 7%, Rakhine 4%, Chinese 3%, Indian 2%, Mon 2%, other 5%. Figures slightly vary from source to source.

Human Right Day

To day is Human Right day. On December 10, 1948 the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Burma is a country that signed the declaration

Article 1. All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.

In Burma only generals have right . We ordinary citizen are second class citizen,

Artilce 3 Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.

No security for ordinary people, we are like a chicken in the basket. Anytime they will pick up and sent to goal without valid reason. We do not understand the meaning of liberty for more than forty years.

Article 5. No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
Torture is common for those who work for democracy.

Article 7. All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law. All are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in violation of this Declaration and against any incitement to such discrimination.
Generals are above the law in town and soldiers are above the law in rural area.

Article 9 No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile.
Arbitrary arrest and detention are common.

Article 13. (1) Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state.(2) Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country.

We have to get permission form respective authorities to take a night stay at the area apart from our home. It is against article 13. Those affiliated with NLD party are not permitted to get passport. Ex political prisoners do not get passport.

The above are only a few comments that SPDC is violating the Human Right Declaration. Who oversee whether the signatories is violating the declaration principles or not? The watch dog is a paper tiger only. Inorder to get back our own right we have to do it by ourself.

see detail for Human Right Declaration in details.

SPDC’s Cruelty and lies

GENEVA (AFP) - At least 31 people were killed in Myanmar during a crackdown on anti-government protests in September, a United Nations human rights expert Paulo Sergio Pinheiro said on Friday.

More than 600 people are detained and 74 listed as missing in the wake of the crackdown, and Myanmar's government has not taken serious steps to respect human rights,Pinheiro said in a report.
The junta had confirmed the deaths of 15 people during the unrest, but Pinheiro said he had received information that at least a further 16 people had been killed. He has provided a list to authorities of an additional 16 people killed in the crackdown, bringing his total to 31. Pinheiro also said he received "credible reports" from a monk detained between Sept. 27 and Oct. 5 that at least 14 individuals died in custody. These included eight monks and one boy, who died on the first day, the monk told Pinheiro, adding that the deaths were due to poor detention conditions. During his visit to the Htain Bin crematorium, authorities said 14 corpses were transferred from the Yangon General Hospital. The bodies were registered and cremated, but three of the dead could not be identified. Eleven of those cremated died as a result of firearm wounds.
Paulo Sergio Pinheiro was denied access to the Ye Way crematorium in Yangon during his five-day trip to the country last month.

"Several reports of killings indicate that the figure provided by the authorities may greatly understimate the reality," the special rapporteur said in a report that will be presented to the UN Human Rights Council next week.

"The use of lethal force by law enforcement officials from 26 to 29 September, 2007 in Myanmar was inconsistent with the fundamental principles reflected in the basic international norms deriving from international customary law," he added.

Detainees remain subject to cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment and torture with political activists and human rights defenders targeted, Pinheiro said.

"Since the crackdown there have been an increasing number of reports of deaths in custody as well as beatings, ill-treatment, lack of food, water or medical treatment in overcrowded unsanitary detention facilities across the country," he added.

SPDC Constitution Fundamentals

The following appear to be some of the SPDC drafted constitution parameters:

The president of the country must have at least 10 years of military service.

Establishment of a bicameral system with an indirectly elected Upper House and a Lower House, which in theory will be elected by universal suffrage. However, 25% of seats in both houses will be filled by non-elected military officials.

The minister of defense and the minister of border areas development will be appointed by the commander-in- chief of the armed forces, not by the parliament or the prime minister.

In case of emergency the military will have the constitutional right to seize power and that seizure should be considered legitimate.

The draft constitution stipulates that a member of the assemblies should have no connection with any foreign government, or children who are not Myanmar citizens.

SPDC Cheat to World again.

The New Light of Myanmar reported on Tuesday that the government granted amnesty to 8,585 prisoners from November 16 to December 3 to mark the successful conclusion of their National Convention. Among those released, 33 were Thai prisoners. only about 20 political prisoners . There are 1,158 political prisoners still being detained in Burmese prisons.

It is just the military government showing that it is cooperating with the United Nations and human rights groups by releasing these prisoners,”. The release of prisoners was no more than an annually staged show for the benefit of the international community to prove that the junta was lenient with prisoners.

Merciless China exploiting Burma

SHANGHAI, China: China National Petroleum Corp., the country's biggest oil and gas producer, has signed an agreement with the southwestern province of Yunnan to cooperate in oil refining, a step toward building a pipeline to neighboring Myanmar, reports said Monday.

The agreement, signed Sunday in Beijing, calls for CNPC and Yunnan to cooperate in building an oil refining base in Yunnan, a landlocked province that has suffered from fuel shortage partly due to its lack of refining facilities, the official Xinhua News Agency repor "

This is a great event for the Yunnan people and for Yunnan's economic development," the Kunming local newspaper Chuncheng Evening News cited top provincial officials as saying.ted.

BEIJING, Dec 3 (Reuters) - A Chinese-invested hydropower project in neighbouring Myanmar has deepened links between China and Myanmar's ruling generals and is destroying local livelihoods and the environment, according to a report released on Monday.

The Shweli dam is China's first build-operate-transfer hydropower project with Myanmar's military government, which recently crushed the biggest pro-democracy protests in nearly 20 years.

Under the agreement with Myanmar's Electric Power Ministry, China's Yunnan Joint Power Development Co are to operate the power station for 40 years. Chinese companies would also receive 80 percent of the revenue generated.

False Press Conference.

Information Minister Brigadier General Kyaw Hsan said at the press conference held on 3 December, the first time after September Saffaron revolution that “No assistance or advice from other persons is required. A 54-member panel, appointed by the Junta will work on a new constitution that will lead to elections.”( If SPDC is taking a step towards democracy, why don’t listen the peoples voice. Who selected the 54 member panel for constitution drafting? SPDC selected the people to attend national Convention without consulting the people, without listening the voice of 1990 election victory party. So how can we believe that you are road map is going toward democracy)

Moreover, Kyaw Hsan reiterated again that the protests as the work of "bogus" monks organised by exiled dissidents and the United States. (Is it possible so many bogus monks( thousands) seen on the street? What do you mean bogus monk. Can you explain what is bogus monk? Are those monks who against the government bogus monk? You better attend Buddhist Fundamental at Ma Soe Yein monastry at Mandalay)

Police chief Khin Yi said that only those involved in arson or the possession of illegal weapons will be brought to trial, protestors who had acted peacefully would not be procecuted.( It is a big lie. Where is the father of the monk Gambira? Why still held in Prison? Why did township P&D taken actions onthose who offered drinks to monks?)

Anwar Ibrahim, Former Malyasis DPM

They had refused to honour the election they themselves had held because people rejected their Military affiliated party and had given mandate to the opposition. It is a blatant insult to the wisdom of the Burmese people and against the basic concepts of democracy.

If some one is regarded to be unreliable and broken the promise, especially if that person is the leader of a country, how could we trust them again?

If the Burmese people rejected their referendum and or the election, what is the Military Junta going to do

Bravo UWSA

Mizzima News (www.mizzima.com )

November 30, 2007 - A Sino-Burmese border based ethnic armed group, the United Wa State Army (UWSA), said it welcomed Burma's pro-democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's statement on national reconciliation and refused to sign the junta's pre-written statement.

An officer of the UWSA, who requested not to be named, told Mizzima that the group, like many other armed ceasefire groups, was pressured by the junta to sign a pre-written declaration condemning Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's statement on cooperating with the ruling junta in order to kick-start a process of national reconciliation.

"U Khin Aung Myint [Burmese Cultural Minister] came to us and pressured us to sign a pre-written statement. But we refused because we did not even see the statement. Moreover, we welcome any efforts toward national reconciliation," the UWSA officer told Mizzima by phone.

The Maggin monastery, that provided a hospice for AIDS patients has been closed down by the Junta yesterday. Three military trucks arrived outside the Maggin Monastery and told everyone inside to leave.

It shows again and again , uncountable times, that Junta has been exercising unlawful practice to its citizen. On what basic they closed the Maggin monastery. Who ordered it? Government or Sanga Maha Nayaka? If Sanga Nayaka have right to intervene, are they dare to intervene. In practice, this affair has to be decided by Sanga Nayaka.

Points to ponder

“If you slaughter the monks and those calling for democracy, when your regime falls, and it will fall, you will be pursued to every corner of the globe like the Nazi criminals before you,” said the hawkish legislator from California. Republican Congressman Dana Rohrabacher,

Burmese Buddist Temple & Activist

David Lim, chairman of Burmese Buddhist temple, said to Straits Times that anyone can come here for prayers, but we dont want it used for political activities. Having a mass of activist shouting slogans did not augur well for the temple image. The temple should be a place of peace,' Lim said, not a domain for 'activists shouting slogans.'
OK Mr Lim, How about those temples in Burma. Peaceful?. Do you think that Mr Yeo, Ms Yade and Ms Munn came to temple to see monk and your committee to discuss the situation in Myanmar. Are you and your committee are scholar or expert in Burma Politics so that Singapore minister , French and UK deputy minister came to BBT to get advise ? Do you think that they visited BBT as a tourist?

If there is no activity at BBT during Saffron revolution do you think that they will come and see your monk and your committee? You may need to see a doctor to get clear view.

What is politics Mr Lim?. Is Praying for fallen heroes at BBT politics? Is Sharing merit at BBT politics. Is Blood donation at BBT politics. These are the things activist did at BBT.
Monk, monastery and democracy activist are closely bind in Burmese history. Please be understand the Burmese politics and its history, otherwise, you are not qualified as BBT chairman.

UN resolution: Paper Tiger

A UN General Assembly committee approved a draft resolution Tuesday strongly condemning the Burmese military government's crackdown on peaceful protesters and calling on the military junta to immediately release political prisoners.

The vote in the assembly's human rights committee was 88-24 with 66 abstentions(which countries are against the vote.? Why 66 countries in absention, ). The resolution now needs the backing of the 192-nation world body. General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding but they do reflect world opinion.

The draft resolution calls on Burma's military government "to desist from further arrests and violence against peaceful protesters" and to lift "all restraints on the peaceful political activity of all persons by ... guaranteeing freedom of peaceful assembly and association and freedom of opinion and expression."

It also calls on the junta to provide UN special adviser Ibrahim Gambari with unrestricted access to all parties—including ethnic minority representatives, student leaders and dissident monks—and to engage with him to achieve "effective progress towards the restoration of democracy and the protection of human rights in Myanmar [Burma]

Singapore Police Proactive action again.

One month ago heavily armed Singapore police came into Penisular Plaza and ordered the two young Burmese to take off red T shirt they were wearing. When that action was raised at the Parliament, deputy home minister replied that it was proactive action by police. If that kind of incident happened in Western countries, the concerned authority will apologized. If this two young men were not Burmese, if they were US citizen, what would be the police action? Are these two young Burmese look like terrorist?

During Asean meeting, Sister of Dr Chee, Singapore Democrat Party Secretary General, went near the Sangri La Hotel. She was blocked by police, while ordinary citizen was allowed to pass through. In the video, you can see an old man passing beyond point of two to three policemen and sister of Dr Che arguing. Police had declared the surrounding of Shangri La hotel as protective zone, however they did not declared that no one was allowed to that area.

I do not understand that if normal person be allowed to that area why police cannot allow Dr Chee’s sister to the area where common citizen are allowed.
Police over action have adverse effect to government.

Be careful Singapore police.

Showing Displeasure with courage

We gathered at Starbucks Café near Orchard Parade Hotel at about 6 pm. Then at about 7 pm, we, altogether about 40, changed our clothes , wear red T shirts, stand in group of three, , on the side of Starbucks café, in front of Orchard Parade Hotel. Few of us held a placard that said “listen to Burma’s desire, don’t follow Junta order” “ Asean act with honour” . We gathered there to show our disappointment of Asean way of handling Burmese affairs.

A lot of media men were there, clipping videos and interviewing some of our fellows. About 20 minutes later about 20 plainclothes policemen approached us and an officer with police uniform told to disperse. A few of us were asked to give their particulars to police at the spot. Some were tailed and asked their particulars at the Orchard MRT Station. One of our men was questioned by CID at a bus stop at Eunos.

How do you feel Mr Lee Hsien Long?

Asean leaders called off abruptly a planned summit briefing by Mr Gambari who was invited by Asean chairman Singapore PM Lee Hsien Long. Mr Gambari will not brief Asean or East Asain summit leaders. The announcement was made at the working dinner of Asean leaders. When the announcement was made Burma PM Than Sein was absence.
Now I think, Mr Lee and his counter part from Asean countries will understand the Burmese Junta behavior. They are selfish and brutal. If you accompany with bad guy, your reputation will be tarnished.
The Junta believe might is right only. It is necessary to cornered the Junta by all means. It is a duty of Asean countries to give lesson if you consider Burma Junta as your family, that word is repeatedly used by Asean.

Asean Summit: What they say on Burma

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao. :We believe that we should continue to promote the good offices done by the United Nations and rely on the efforts of the people of Burma so that the process toward national reconciliation can be restored and the country can realize peace, stability and development,»

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Sunday rejected the imposition of sanctions against the military government in Myanmar, saying they hurt the civilian population but not the generals. "Economic sanctions are not good and would not make the leaders of Myanmar die," Mr Hun Sen told a business forum in Singapore on the eve of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit. "It is more of a disaster for the civilians. So one should not play the game of sanctions,"

The Regional Human Rights group Alternative ASEAN Network ,Coordinator Debbie Storthard told the BBC that ASEAN should not allow the junta to use its roadmap as smokescreen and justification to wreak havoc.

Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer “It is now time for ASEAN to back its words with actions” The US Senate on Friday unanimously adopted a resolution calling on Southeast Asian leaders to suspend Myanmar at the summit as punishment over its bloody September crackdown on pro-democracy protests.

Asean Secretary -General Ong Keng Yong defended ASEAN's stance of favouring engagement with the ageing generals who run Myanmar, and said that if threatened with expulsion, they would "just walk away".

Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said in an interview with CNBC Asia ahead of the ASEAN summit Nobody in Asia supports sanctions against Myanmar..

Lecture note for SPDC

Responsibility of government :

Listen to its own people, respond to legitimate popular demand, respect in full the human right of the citizen( Gambari, report to UN Security on The situation in Myanamr, UNSC 5777 meeting, 13 Nov, 2007)

can you give this message to military Junta in next trip? You will be superman if the Junta accept it.

Bowed slightly is not enough

Gambari reported at the UN security council that the junta bowed slightly to international pressure to talk to its opposition but still holds tightly to power.(Not enough; Mr Gambari, still arresting activist. Should stop arresting first if they have genuine intention for reconciliation)

Gambari emphasized the positive side of his second visit . Myanmar's ambassador to the U.N., Kyaw Tint Swe, made it clear that his government expected rewards for its positive moves and that sanctions or criticism would be met with further defiance.( Mr Gambari, be caution when analyzing the current situation, Junta servant is aking reward)

Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- The President of the U.N. General Assembly Srgjan Kerim, President welcomed the inauguration of a process that may lead to substantive and unconditional dialogue among the main parties. He stressed the importance that this process "must achieve concrete results and a clear commitment on the part of the government of Myanmar is required to work constructively with the Special Advisor."

The U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, welcomes the willingness expressed by both sides to work with the United Nations to this end,''
Reiterating that return to the status quo that existed before the crisis is not sustainable, Ban encourages the government and all relevant parties to redouble their efforts towards achieving national reconciliation, democracy and full respect for human rights.

What else can we do? Take fresh approach

FM George Yeo said (at dialogue session between Foreign Minister and 50 students from the Singapore Management University 0n Friday,)

If we freeze the bank accounts of those whom we don’t like, after a while we will cease to be a financial center.

On Junta leaders seeking medical treatment here, he said turning them away was not helpful to a policy of engagement which is what works best to get a country to change.

Mr Yeo asked: “ what else can we do? Invade Myanmar? Remove Than Swe, the way the Americans removed Saddam Hussein? Then What after that.

( excerpts from Today Newspaper, 10 November)

I don’t want to argue on his defense for Singapore financial center if Singapore freeze the Junta bank accounts. Please bear in mind that keeping the Junta money in Singapore is like keeping robbed money , that is against the civilized law.

Regarding on Mr Yeo question on” what else we can do”, there are so many ways Singapore can help Burmese. The people of Burma will whole heartedly welcome if troops led by Singapore come into Burma to topple the Junta. Burma will not be a scenario like Iraq after invasion. There is no hatred between ethnic minorities like Kurds and Iraqi, no religious division in Burma such as Sunni and Shiite in Iraq. At the Asean Inter-parliamentary Myanmar Caucus Seminar held on Nov 9, 2007 in Singapore, U Bo Hla Tint pointed out that armed conflicts between the ethnics groups were thing of the past . Thus Burma would be thrown into disarray should the Junta be suddenly replaced by a democratic government concept is not valid. Those who advocate this concept do not understand Burma political scenario.
At the Asean Inter-parliamentary Myanmar Caucus Seminar, the rest of the group, except Deputy Speaker of Parliament Indranee Rajah, called for greater action from Asean, it was not enough for Asean only to put its full moral weight behind Mr Gambari's mission. I totally agree with Mr Charles Chong that as Asean has been using softer approach in persuasion for more than 10 years, it is really a time to take a fresh approach.

Thank You Mr Gambari.

November 8, 2007 – United Nations Special Envoy to Burma, Ibrahim Gambari, has issued a blunt warning to Burma's military government that a return to the status quo of pre-protest Burma is unacceptable.

Gambari Visit: Pro and cons

Pros.

1. Daw Su can release the statement(meaningful and time bound dialogue with SDPC)
2. Daw Su and NLD leader can meet.

Cons Minimum release of international pressure especially in Asean summit.

It is a big win for SPDC,and big lost for us, as there will be a minimum release of international pressure especially in Asean summit. SPDC IS PLAYING GAME FOR ASEAN SUMMIT..

Following is the text of the statement by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, as released Mr Ibrahim Gambari.

By Assiociated Press

"I wish to thank all those who have stood by my side all this time, both inside and outside my country. I am also grateful to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, for his unwavering support for the cause of national reconciliation, democracy and human rights in my country.

"I welcome the appointment on 8 October of Minister Aung Kyi as minister for relations. Our first meeting on 25 October was constructive and I look forward to further regular discussions. I expect that this phase of preliminary consultations will conclude soon so that a meaningful and timebound dialogue with the SPDC leadership can start as early as possible.

"In the interest of the nation, I stand ready to cooperate with the government in order to make this process of dialogue a success and welcome the necessary good offices role of the United Nations to help facilitate our efforts in this regard.

"In full awareness of the essential role of political parties in democratic societies, in deep appreciation of the sacrifices of the members of my party and in my position as General Secretary, I will be guided by the policies and wishes of the National League for Democracy. However, in this time of vital need for democratic solidarity and national unity, it is my duty to give constant and serious considerations to the interests and opinions of as broad a range of political organizations and forces as possible, in particular those of our ethnic nationality races.

"To that end, I am committed to pursue the path of dialogue constructively and invite the government and all relevant parties to join me in this spirit.

"I believe that stability, prosperity and democracy for my country, living at peace with itself and with full respect for human rights, offers the best prospect for my country to fully contribute to the development and stability of the region in close partnership with its neighbors and fellow ASEAN members, and to play a positive role as a respected member of the international community.

Daw Su Unwell

November 06, 2007—Burma’s detained democracy icon, Aung San Suu Kyi, is being treated at her home for an unknown illness, according to her party, the National League for Democracy. NLD Spokesman Nyan Win told The Irrawaddy on Tuesday that the party had learnt that medical personnel had been visiting her lakeside home on Rangoon’s University Avenue. “But we do not know yet whether she is suffering from a serious illness or not,” said Nyan Win. The Irrawaddy could not reach Suu Kyi’s family doctor for his comment. [The Irrawaddy

Singapore reply to 88 generation student

SINGAPORE: Singapore continues to give its full backing to the United Nations Secretary-General's envoy Ibrahim Gambari as he helps Myanmar achieve a peaceful reconciliation.
Myanmar’s pro-democracy group 88 Generation Students had written to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Foreign Affairs Minister George Yeo on Thursday, asking for ASEAN to consider suspending Myanmar's membership of ASEAN and other issues.
Responding with points made by Minister Yeo in parliament last month, Special Assistant to Minister Chi Chiew Sum said ASEAN needs to retain links with Myanmar in order to keep its moral influence on the nation.
He assured the group that Singapore is committed to continue working with the UN for peaceful national reconciliation in Myanmar. - CNA/ac
